All You Need to Know About Microgreens

What are microgreens and their benefits?

If you ever read health-based articles, you might have heard of microgreens. They have recently become a popular topic in the health world thanks to their many benefits. So what are microgreens and their benefits?

For many people who are trying to live a more health-conscious lifestyle, microgreens are becoming a part of their daily routine. They are becoming a popular topping on sandwiches and in salads. Many people are even choosing to grow their own microgreens.

what are microgreens?

Microgreens are a young vegetable, similar to that of sprouts. However, there is a difference as microgreens have leaves and are grown from sprouts. As soon as a plant has cotyledon leaves, it is a microgreen.

They are grown from herbs and vegetables, with kale, broccoli, parsley, cauliflower, and cabbage being some of the most popular. In addition to being added to salads and sandwiches, they can easily be mixed into smoothies and baked goods.

benefits of microgreens

Microgreens are packed full of many nutritional benefits. They can help prevent certain diseases, manage your weight, and help with your mental and physical health. Though microgreens may be tiny, they are very beneficial in many ways.

Researchers have found that microgreens are full of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and fiber. One of the most interesting things about microgreens is that they have lots of phytochemicals, which are the compounds that give plants color, taste, and smell. In fact, microgreens can have up to 40 times more phytochemicals than mature plants, according to the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry.

In addition, microgreens can help boost your immune system. They have also been proven to lower your blood pressure and decrease your chances of heart disease. It is believed that they can even reduce your chances of cancer, according to research by the journal Future of Oncology.

    growing microgreens

The great thing about microgreens is that they can be grown in soil or hydroponically. This makes them easy to grow wherever you live. They need sunlight and typically are harvested in 1-3 weeks of growing.

Most microgreens can be grown in a tray that is approximately 5×5 inches. Before planting, some seeds will be soaked in order to help their growing process. One to two teaspoons of seeds can be added to dampened soil.

The seeds can be covered with another layer of damp soil or covered with a clear lid or plastic wrap. Lightly mist one to two times a day and allow for at least four hours of sunlight. Once leaves begin to form, you can remove the covering.

what plants can you get protein from?

Many people assume that meat is the only good way to get protein. Though meat can be a great source of protein, so can plants like kale. Kale, which is one of the healthiest foods, has 4% protein per serving.

Other plants grown as microgreens, such as broccoli and cauliflower, can also be a good source of protein. In addition to having a healthy dose of protein, scientists have also found these vegetables to be full of minerals, vitamins, and other beneficial nutrients.
